2013- 14 was a busy year for the Diversity committee. In the fall, we hosted a school-wide family movie and art night; screening “That’s A Family” – a short family film which highlights the diverse nature of family units – and inviting PS 321 families to create artwork reflecting on their own family structure. In the winter of 2014 we reached out to our local community for a panel discussion regarding gentrification in Brooklyn and held our first ever Diversity Reading Afternoon in the school library. We also initiated the Annual Martin Luther King Essay and Art Competition in January to great success. In spring, we held a book discussion for parents based upon Amy Chua’s “Triple Package,” and a parenting workshop entitled “Raising your child in a different culture” – all while preparing and hosting our yearly popular school-wide festival, Around the World in 80+ Minutes. To cap off the school year we co-hosted the standing room only Wonder Night event with author RJ Palacio in June. She discussed her touching and important book about difference and inclusion with our older students and we also coordinated with the 4th and 5th grade teachers and students, as well as individual PS 321 families, to turn our bulletin board into a celebration of the book and it’s message.
