We are thrilled to welcome Emily Arnold McCully to PS 321 on Wednesday, Jan 27, 2016. Emily was born in Galesburg, Illinois, but grew up in New York City. She loved drawing and reading from a young age and began thinking of the world in terms of stories. An explorer and a dare-devil, she wanted to be a naturalist when she grew up. As a child she used to illustrate programs she heard on the radio, and by college she was writing musical comedies and acting. She saw plays as being like picture books: you select a cast, create costumes and set, then arrange the scenes, building to a climax. After earning her Master’s degree in art history, she went on to write and illustrate several stories about brave girls and historical subjects. Mirette on the High Wire earned her a Caldecott Medal in 1993, and her many other books for kids include Queen of the Diamond, Dare the World, Marvelous Mattie and The Bobbin Girl. She remains a resident of New York and continues to act, write, paint and publish books.
