The first day of school is Thursday, September 8. Welcome back! Usually, school begins at 8:30 AM and ends at 2:50 PM daily, but we have some special instructions for the first two days of school, particularly for Kindergarten and First grade. See below for information for all grades.
Kindergarten: All Kindergarten classes will have a half day of school on Thursday, September 8. Please bring your child to the classroom at 8:50 and pick your child up from the classroom at 11:45 on this day. The second day of school will also begin at 8:50 but will end at 2:45. Please do not arrive early on these days as older students will be coming in the front doors at that point. The regular Kindergarten schedule, 8:30 am – 2:45 pm, will start on Tuesday, September 13.
First and Second Grades: For the first two days of school, parents or caregivers of First and Second graders accompany their children into their classrooms. In order to make for a smoother smart and minimize foot traffic, for the first two days of school, first graders will begin at 8:40 AM. All other grades begin at the usual time, which is 8:30 AM.
All First graders and those Second graders in 2-201, 2-202, 2-204, 2-220, and 2-225 should enter through the front doors and go to the second floor. Someone will direct you to your child’s classroom. Second graders in 2-M4, 2-M5, 2-M6, and 2-M10 are in the mini-school, the building behind the main building. Entrance is through the center doors of the mini-school. Beginning on Tuesday, September 13, first and second graders should be dropped at the door (front or mini-school) to walk to their classrooms on their own. Staff members will be on the stairs and in the halls to help.
First grade classes are all dismissed in front of the main building. Please wait for your children on the main steps or on benches to the side of the steps. Do not come down the steps or else it is too difficult for all the classes to exit the building. Second grade teachers will tell you their dismissal doors, but all main-building Second Grades get dismissed through one of the doors on Second Street; Mini-school classes get dismissed through the middle mini-school doors.
Third, Fourth, and Fifth Grades:
All Third, Fourth, and Fifth graders line up in the back yard at 8:25AM, and their teachers will come to meet them and bring them upstairs or into the mini-school. For the first few days, teachers will have signs with their name and class numbers. Parents do not accompany Third, Fourth, or Fifth graders into the building. At dismissal, upper grade teachers from the main building walk their classes to the same line they were at in the morning, and parents are asked not to crowd around the beginning of the line but to stay toward the back. Third grade mini-school classes dismiss through the center mini-school doors. Although it is fine for children to play in the yard once they are picked up, there is no ball playing until after 3:05 as a safety precaution. In addition, scooters and skateboards are not allowed in the yard or in school as we do not have room for them in classrooms.
It is extremely important that you bring your children to school on time and pick up promptly at 2:50 PM. Please notify the teacher, in writing, of any after school programs your child participates in. Pick up for these programs is generally from the auditorium or another designated spot in the main building or the back yard. If your upper grade child has permission to walk home from school alone, we need to have that permission in writing from you.
All students are entitled to get free breakfast in the school lunch room beginning at 8:00AM. We have an early bird program available for a fee beginning on September 13. This program meets in the gym beginning at 7:30am and is supervised by two PS 321 teachers. If you are interested in this program, you can go to the gym between 7:30-8:20am beginning September 13 to sign up. You can sign up on the same day you begin or in advance.
Thank you! Here’s to a wonderful school year.
