The New York State Education Department has Announced 13 Public Meetings to receive feedback on their draft of the Every Student Succeeds Act Plan. This is a chance for parents and educators to go on the record about what they want the future of accountability in NYS to look like.
NYSAPE and Class Size Matters have been advocating for a system that uses their Opportunity to Learn Index. Using their index schools would be rated on things like class sizes, recess time, access to art, music and drama, access to social workers and counselors, course offerings, and other school quality indicators.
Please consider attending one of the upcoming meetings in NYC. If you support the Opportunity to Learn Index make your voice heard. After a poorly attended meeting in Long Island LI Opt Out Leader Jeanette Duetermann said, “…the message we just sent to State Ed was ‘we don’t care one bit – do whatever you want with our education system. We trust you.’ …We cannot keep waiting for others to fix this for us. Those that say the opt out movement isn’t enough to force change are correct. It MUST be accompanied by a strong voice in the actual process of those changes.”
