We are thinking of you and miss seeing everyone at drop off, pick up and Family Fridays. We hope that you and your families are staying safe and well, but know this is a very challenging time and many are struggling. We are thinking of you and sending you our love and thoughts.
We wanted to share how the COVID-19 pandemic and response has impacted the PS321 PTA and our capacity to support the community. Normally at this time of year, the PTA would be holding elections for next year’s positions. Instead, we have shifted elections for PTA officers and new School Leadership Team members to the fall of 2020 and are holding our PTA Officers meetings and SLT meetings via Zoom. At this time of year, we normally hold our biggest fundraisers; instead today we are facing a shortfall of approximately $300,000. Combined with anticipated cuts to the Department of Education’s budget, our shortfall means that larger class sizes in the fall are likely. Most importantly, it means we will not be able to host many of the community-building activities that are an important part of our school culture.
Many of you have asked how you can help – thank you. Here are a few ways:
- We have listed some resources and local charities who are supporting those affected by coronavirus. Have another? Email a brief description and link to our parent coordinator, Deb Orr, or us.
- For those who can, please consider a donation to our school. We need your financial contributions more than ever to help close the budget gap caused by the disruptions from the coronavirus pandemic. Given the fundraising shortfall, we will most likely see cuts to the enrichments funded by the PTA, as well as larger class sizes for the 2020/2021 academic year. Donations made before June will have the biggest impact on these decisions.
- We are also excited to be planning a scaled-back online auction later this month. Please help spread the word once the auction is open. We will send more details soon. If you’d like to help or have questions, email PS321Gala@gmail.com.
As always, if you have ideas or questions, or are interested in joining the SLT or PTA Executive Board next year, please don’t hesitate to email us. We are also trying to keep the school website updated; please continue to visit ps321.org for additional information or ways to help. We wish you and your families the very best, and can’t wait to see you when school reopens and social distancing restrictions are lifted.
