Dear PS 321 Families,
At our Wednesday, August 5, School Leadership Team Meeting, after a presentation about our school reopening plans, teachers presented the results of a UFT Survey of teachers, paraprofessionals, and other staff. The results show how concerned the large majority of staff members are about returning to school.
We know that many of you are trying to decide whether or not to send your child to school in person or to select the all-remote model. Most parents have to work themselves, often in positions that involve some risk of COVID-19. Some need to have children in school in order to keep their jobs. And, all of us know that most children are craving the social interactions of being in school and the benefits of in-person teaching. Although all of us would love to go back to how things were last September, we know that is not currently an option. In-person school will look very different with children wearing masks all day, keeping 6 feet away from other people, and eating lunch in the classroom. We still have many unanswered questions from the Department of Education, but from the answers we do have, it seems likely that even those who are in the hybrid model will periodically have to become all remote as illnesses occur in school.
We value the close collaboration between staff and families at PS 321. We understand that each family needs to make the decision that works for you, and we respect that. The SLT thought it would be important for you to have information about staff members’ perspectives as you decide whether to select the all-remote option, a decision that is supposed to be made by Friday. The more families who select the all-remote option, the more teachers who will be able to teach remotely as opposed to in school. Please know that your child will be supported and taught a rich curriculum by dedicated, creative teachers whichever option you select.
The website to opt into remote learning can be found here.
