The Direct Appeal is the PTA’s most crucial fundraising effort of the year. Like most public institutions, NYC public schools faced enormous budget cuts during the recession. From 2008 to 2011, PS 321’s budget was reduced by $1.2 million. That is more than $800 less per student. Only a fraction of those cuts have been reinstated, while costs have risen. In response, the support of our families has been incredible and our fundraising has increased dramatically in order to make up for these cuts.
For example, when faced with the prospect of losing teachers (and increasing class size) in 2010, the PTA started paying for two arts teachers. Gradually that number increased to four arts teachers and five kindergarten teaching assistants. But while we have done so much, we still face financial challenges each year. Last June, when PTA officers met with Principal Phillips, we all agreed that the PTA could not afford to pay for four arts teachers again this year. As a result, the school had to fund one more arts teacher out of its DOE budget, which meant reducing the number of classrooms we hoped to have in one of the grades by one.
We know that it seems like there are many fundraisers at PS 321, and there are. Each is necessary, and every dollar raised helps our school. This year, we are asking all families to include the Direct Appeal on the list of ways they support PS 321. We know some families can afford to contribute $800 per child (the amount cut from our DOE budget), while others can afford less and some can afford more. Please give what you can,
