Out to Lunch: Healthy Choices and Student Deals

G&H

Lunchtime Guide

Going out to lunch is a treasured privilege for 4th and 5th graders. Being able to make food choices independently is exciting but also a huge responsibility. The Green & Healthy Committee has put together a list of the menu items for the establishments where kids are permitted to dine. Of course, students can always bring their own ‘take-out’ from home, or get a grab-and-go bag from the cafeteria and eat and socialize on the red benches in front of the school. Grab-and-Go lunch sacks, including a PB&J or cheese sandwich, carrot sticks and fruit, are available to any student at the lunchroom: .

To save money and instill both green and healthy values, consider sending your child with a reusable water bottle and encourage kids to avoid taking any excess plastic silverware, condiments, napkins and bags from the restaurants. We ask that you remind our children that cleaning up their waste is a must, and that they should sort it properly in one of the bin stations in the front of our school. Also, it’s important for children to remember that candy and sugary drinks are unhealthy and impact performance during the day.

On days where children eat in our lunchroom, a delicious, fresh salad bar is always an option. Also, check out our monthly K-8 Alternative Lunch Menu at www.schoolfoodnyc.org to find out what’s cookin’.
