Fall 2015 Update
Welcome back to the garden! Plantville is bursting with the bounty of fall and classes are busy harvesting and planting cool weather crops! Keep an eye on the garden as things change throughout the fall.
Harvest Day is coming on Wednesday, October 28 – As always volunteers are needed to fill sample cups, make teacher treats, and serve samples at lunchtime. It’s a great day; consider volunteering for a couple of hours or all day if you have the time. Use this Volunteerspot link to sign up and feel free to contact the garden co-chairs with questions.
Work with classes in the garden – Teachers often request assistance to bring their classes into the garden. Activities will change with the seasons and may include harvesting, planting, sheet mulching, measuring the square foot garden and more! Let us know if you are available during the school day and we’ll contact you when a teacher requests help.
Open the Garden at recess – The children love to explore the garden during recess and after school. We are looking for volunteers who can be available during lunch and grade recess to open the garden and supervise children as they explore. We’ll provide ideas for activities. This can be on a regular basis or just when you have a little extra time. If you open the gates the kids will come!!
Compost Manager – This task includes chopping, clipping, balancing and mixing the compost to insure that it’s breaking down. Feed the worms every couple of weeks, rotate the bins and insure that that they have enough moisture. Timing for this job is completely flexible, can be evenings or weekends, anytime the schoolyard is open.
Coming in January of 2016: Green and Healthy night – This fun evening is packed with green and healthy activities. Families take part in a gardening-themed activity such as planting, identifying seeds and plants or tasting. If you would like to volunteer for one event rather than a year-round commitment then this could be the opportunity for you! We are looking for a Coordinator for the Garden activity at this event as well as other volunteers.
Spring Garden Stations – Work with classes in the garden for an intensive week in spring. We will need parent volunteers to coordinate classes and work with teachers and students in the garden for a grade specific intensive week in the garden. This is generally a second grade activity and will be developed over the summer
General Garden Maintenance – We are always looking for people to help with garden maintenance which can be on a flexible schedule – after school or on weekends. Sometimes special projects arise that need additional volunteers. If you would like to help but can’t make a regular commitment please let us know. We’ll contact you when opportunities are available.
Rain Barrel – Check out our new blue rain barrel! Plantville is now even greener – we are harvesting and storing rainwater to keep our plants hydrated between fall showers. Our rain barrel was installed by volunteers on the Green Apple Day of Service in September. Thank you to the volunteers for helping Plantville conserve water!
As always, THANK YOU to our summer gardeners. It’s due to your care and commitment this summer that we have a wonderful crop for Harvest Day!
